How You Can Help

 Q. I would like an Irish-Medium school / Gaelscoil in my area, how can I help?

 A. Firstly, please select the option of an Irish-Medium school for your area on the survey from the Department of Education and Skills this Autumn. Secondly, Please inform and ask other parents to support your choice. If you wish to get more involved in this campaign, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Caoimhín or Siobhán at the office (contact details below).

Why are parents being asked to complete this survey?

This survey for parents is proposed as a result of the Report on Patronage and Pluralism in the Primary Sector by the Department of Education. Currently, out of 3,000 primary schools, there are around 2,900 primary schools under the patronage of the Catholic Church. The Department is seeking to explore the possibility of divesting some of these schools from the Catholic Church to other patrons.

Type of School

 Q. What type of school is An Foras Pátrúnachta proposing for my area?

A. An Foras Pátrúnachta proposes an Irish-Medium school that is co-educational(boys and girls attending), child-centred, democratic, with a Multidenominational ethos.

 Q. My child has special needs. Can I send my child to an Irish-Medium school?

A. Of course. An Irish-Medium school is run in the same manner, with the same resources and funding from the Department of Education, as an English-Medium school. Applications to the Department of Education with regards to special needs assistants are made in the same manner as all primary schools.

 Q. There is an Irish-Medium school in this area already, why would we propose another Irish-Medium school?

A. This survey aims to reflect the choices of parents in relation to the provision of schools in their area. The Advisory Group to the Forum on Patronage and Pluralism reported that there is growing parental demand for Irish-Medium education in the country. An Foras Pátrúnachta is asking parents to consider the benefits of Irish-Medium education and to select this type of school for your area. With only a little over 140 Gaelscoileanna in the country out of a total of 3000 schools it is clear that there is a need and a demand for more. We believe that every child should have the right to access an education through the medium of Irish in Ireland.

 Q. There is an Irish-Medium school with a Catholic ethos under An Foras Pátrúnachta in my area. Will this process affect the patronage of this school?

A. No. Divesting of patronage will only occur in primary schools under the Patronage of the Catholic Church.

 Q. There is an Irish-Medium school with a Interdenominational/Multidenominational ethos under An Foras Pátrúnachta in my area. Will this process affect the patronage of this school?

A. No. Divesting of patronage will only occur in primary schools under the Patronage of the Catholic Church.

School’s Ethos

 Q. I would prefer if the ethos of my child’s school stays the same. How will I answer this on the survey?

 A. When you complete this survey, it should reflect parents’ choices regarding the new school(s) in their area. If you would like the current ethos of your child’s school to remain or to be the ethos of the new school(s), you should express this opinion by selecting that particular ethos/choice on the survey.

 Q. What if I prefer an Irish-Medium school under An Foras Pátrúnachta but with a Catholic or Interdenominational or other ethos?

A. Please select An Foras Pátrúnachta as your chosen school patron and the ethos that you prefer for the new school(s) in your area.

 Q. What does a Multidenominational Irish-Medium school under An Foras Pátrúnachta mean?

 A. Every child has equal access to the school regardless of their religion, culture etc. Aspects of religion, beliefs, morals and ethics are taught to children without any emphasis on any one religion. The Croí na Scoile (Heart of the School) Programme as composed by the school in collaboration with An Foras Pátrúnachta will be adhered to. Arrangements are made for the teaching of denominational religion to children outside official school time, if parents wish. Religious groups holding classes in the school, outside official school time, should be taught through the medium of Irish. The teaching staff will not have a duty to take on this responsibility.
